Argentina vs Morocco Round of 32: The LMS Pick That Could End Your Run
On paper, Argentina vs Morocco is the clearest result of the night. Argentina are the defending world champions. Lionel Messi, at what is almost certainly his final World Cup, is playing with the controlled intensity of a man who knows exactly what he is doing. Argentina have the squad, the tournament experience, and the individual quality to win this match.
Morocco, however, are not paper.
What Morocco have actually done at this tournament
Morocco came into 2026 as one of the most improved sides in international football following their 2022 semi-final run. They have not regressed. They finished second in a competitive group, kept two clean sheets in three games, and conceded only from a penalty across the entire group stage.
Their defensive structure is extraordinary. They sit in a deep, compact 4-5-1 that suffocates space in behind and makes life difficult for technically superior sides who want to play through central areas. Their transition game — the moment they win the ball and move it quickly through three or four passes — creates chances from positions that look defensive until they are not.
Morocco beat Spain in 2022 on penalties from exactly this game plan. They went to the semi-finals doing this against Portugal. They know how to make a great team frustrated, and a frustrated great team in knockout football is dangerous territory for your LMS pick.
The Messi factor
Messi changes the calculation somewhat. Argentina with Messi in form and a knockout game in front of him is a different proposition to Argentina without him. He sees things. He manufactures moments out of nothing. In a tight game where Morocco are well-organised and nothing is happening, Messi is exactly the kind of player who finds a moment of brilliance that wins it.
That said, Messi has played in tight games against well-organised defensive sides before and been held. Portugal held him for long stretches in the 2022 quarter-final before Argentina eventually won. Morocco are capable of implementing that same suffocation for 90 minutes.
The question is whether Argentina's other players can find a way through if Morocco close the space around Messi. The answer, historically, is: sometimes.
Why this is the riskiest pick of the night
Four matches today. If you had to rank them by upset probability:
- Portugal vs Belgium — Belgium are capable but Portugal are in form. This match has the clearest favourite.
- Spain vs Norway — Norway with Haaland are dangerous, but Spain's possession game neutralises his best attributes.
- France vs Uruguay — Uruguay are defensive and disciplined. France are the better side by a significant margin.
- Argentina vs Morocco — A 70% favourite at best, playing against the only side in tonight's fixtures with a demonstrated ability to beat teams of Argentina's quality.
Seventy percent sounds comfortable. In accumulator betting, it represents strong confidence. In Last Man Standing, where the correct response to a 70% pick is often to use a 90% pick instead if one exists, it is worth pausing.
If you have Portugal available, or a match tomorrow where a clear group winner is playing a third-placed qualifier with limited credentials, you have a cleaner option than Argentina today.
When you should back Argentina anyway
If your pool options are running out. If you have already used Portugal, Germany, France, Brazil, Spain, and Netherlands — which is possible if you have been in the pool since the group stage began — then Argentina is a reasonable spend today. They will likely win.
If Morocco's defensive game plan bothers you less than the maths suggests. Some LMS players correctly assess that Argentina's attacking quality will find a way through any organised defence eventually. There is merit in this view.
If you have Argentina as your one remaining elite pick and you are concerned about the Round of 16 draw. If Argentina beat Morocco today, they will face the winner of one of tonight's other matches in the Round of 16. That could be Spain or France. Using Argentina now and saving a different pick for an easier Round of 16 fixture might be the more sensible sequencing.
The practical advice
Do not dismiss Morocco. If you back Argentina tonight and Morocco hold them goalless at half-time, which is exactly what Morocco are designed to do, do not panic. Argentina may well find a way through in the second half. But prepare for the possibility that this match goes to 80 minutes level and your LMS pool run is being decided by a single Messi half-chance.
If Portugal are still available to you, use them tonight and keep Argentina for a cleaner situation tomorrow or in the Round of 16.
If Argentina is all you have, back them. They will probably win. Probably is the most accurate word available.
