Germany at World Cup 2026: The LMS Pick Everyone's Saving for the Wrong Round

Germany are in nearly every LMS player's back pocket.

Not used yet. Saved for later. "I'll use them in the quarter-finals when they matter." This is how most pools think about Germany, and it is the reason most pools end up not using Germany at all — because someone else in their group eliminated them in a round they did not expect, or because they survived long enough with better picks and never needed to call on the Germans.

Here is the reality of Germany as an LMS pick, and the right round to deploy them.

Why Germany are the pick everyone trusts

Germany have not been eliminated in the group stage of a World Cup since 1938. The notable exception — Russia 2018, where they went out third in a group containing Mexico and Sweden — shocked the football world precisely because it had never happened to Germany before. And Germany being Germany, they went and won the Euros in 2024 to remind everyone that was an anomaly.

They are tactically flexible, physically dominant, and do not have the individual brilliance of France or Brazil but compensate with collective organisation that rarely completely fails. They win matches they are supposed to win. At the World Cup group stage, they are about as reliable as any team in the tournament.

Their squad for 2026 is built around a core that knows how to win knockout football. Florian Wirtz pulls strings in midfield. Kai Havertz and Leroy Sané are the attacking outlet. The defence has been rebuilt after the Neuer era. This is not the same Germany who sleepwalked out in 2018 — this is a team that came into this tournament as one of the serious contenders.

The group stage trap

Germany are overvalued in the group stage for LMS purposes. Not because they're likely to lose — they're not — but because using Germany to beat Ivory Coast on Matchday 2 is a waste. Germany will very probably win that match. But so will a lot of teams you haven't used yet.

The opportunity cost is real. Every LMS pick has a value based on two things: how likely the team is to win this specific match, and how much you still need that team for future rounds. Germany's value goes up in the knockout rounds because:

Every match becomes single-elimination — they have to try to win
Their opponents are stronger, meaning Germany's quality advantage is tested and confirmed by the win
Fewer teams remain, meaning your "obvious" picks start running out

Using Germany against a group stage opponent who has no realistic chance of beating them is fine if you are desperate for a pick. It is not fine if you have alternatives.

The right round to use Germany

The round of 32 or the round of 16.

Not the quarter-finals or the semi-finals — you probably will not be in a position where you have Germany in reserve and it is the semi-finals, and if you are, you have much bigger problems with who to pick in the other matches.

The round of 32 is the first round where Germany's quality is genuinely tested by a team that also survived the group stage. That is the match you want to commit to them. They will probably win. They will probably do it without producing the kind of 79% possession and no goals that haunts England's Matchday 2.

If you miss the round of 32 window and are still surviving with Germany untouched in the round of 16, excellent — use them there. A Germany vs a quarter-final calibre opponent is one of the cleanest LMS picks in the tournament.

One risk worth knowing

Germany's Achilles heel at major tournaments is the knockout upset. They have an above-average record across group stages and knockout rounds historically, but their exits — when they come — tend to be dramatic and poorly-timed. 2018. Euro 2020 against England. These are not common events but they happen, and they happen at moments when half the surviving LMS pools have just picked Germany.

When everyone picks the same team in a round, a single upset eliminates half the pool simultaneously. If Germany are the consensus safe pick in the round of 32, consider whether your pool needs the differentiation — whether being one of the only survivors who did not pick Germany gives you a structural advantage over the remaining field.

Usually it does not. Usually Germany win. But it is worth asking the question before you follow the crowd.
