These teams win their matches. That is not the problem. The problem is that by the time the tournament gets genuinely difficult — round of 16, quarter-finals, the stage where every pick is a meaningful call — you have already used the teams that would have made those picks easy.

Here are the five teams you want to still have available when the knockout rounds get hard.

1. France

France are the most reliable LMS pick in a World Cup because they win games they are expected to win and they advance deep into tournaments consistently. They have the squad depth to rotate through the group stage without dropping matches, and they tend to peak in the knockouts rather than in the opening rounds.

If you backed France in the group stage, you used a premium pick to win a game they were always going to win. The value of a France pick is highest in the round of 16 and beyond — when the opponents are better, the pressure is higher, and the squads with less depth start to show cracks.

Save France for the quarter-finals if you can. Round of 16 at the earliest.

2. Spain

Spain under Luis de la Fuente play a brand of football that is extremely difficult to break down over 90 minutes in a knockout tie. They do not always win 3-0 — they win 1-0, comfortably, by controlling the ball for sixty minutes until the opponent runs out of ideas.

For LMS purposes, this is ideal. You do not need your pick to score six goals. You need them to not lose. Spain's style makes them one of the most reliable knockout picks in the tournament — they are not exciting, but they grind results.

They are also frequently underestimated by LMS pool members who back more exciting sides. Which means if you have Spain available in the round of 16, you are probably one of the few players in your pool who does.

3. Argentina

Argentina are the defending champions. They are also a team that raises their performance in knockout football compared to the group stage. Lionel Messi's tournament record across World Cups shows a consistent pattern of improvement as the knockout rounds progress.

The risk with Argentina is that they can be inconsistent in the group stage — drawing games, winning scrappily, looking beatable. This puts some LMS players off backing them early, which means many pools will have Argentina available in the knockouts even when other elite sides have already been used.

That inconsistency also makes Argentina dangerous to save too long. If you have not used them by the quarter-finals and they draw a difficult side, you might be in trouble. Round of 16 is the sweet spot.

4. Germany

Germany are the most dependable knockout pick in modern World Cup football for a specific reason: they almost never lose to teams ranked below them in the round of 16 and beyond. They can have a poor group stage — they have done it multiple times — and still find a gear in the knockouts that lower-ranked sides cannot match.

This makes them ideal for the round of 16 specifically. After the group stage weirdness, the round of 16 field contains one or two surprise qualifiers. Germany against a surprise qualifier in the round of 16 is one of the most reliable bets in LMS football.

Do not save Germany beyond the quarter-finals. By that stage, the opponents are good enough that the result is genuinely uncertain and you want a more form-based pick.

5. Portugal

Portugal's value in LMS pools has increased since 2022. The post-Ronaldo transition has produced a genuinely deeper squad — one that is no longer reliant on a single player to manufacture chances. Bruno Fernandes orchestrates, the forwards finish, and the defensive structure is better organised than it was in the Ronaldo era.

Portugal's risk is that they occasionally go out earlier than expected — the 2022 quarter-final being the obvious example. But they reliably make the round of 16 and usually the quarter-finals, which gives you two solid picks from one squad if you time them correctly.

Use Portugal in the round of 16 as a near-guaranteed qualifier to the quarter-finals, then reassess.

The underlying logic

Every pick you make in the group stage is a pick you cannot make in the knockouts. The group stage is the cheapest part of the tournament in terms of LMS stakes — it is the easiest to survive, the opponents are weakest, and the results are most predictable.

The knockout rounds are the expensive part. Every pick from the round of 32 onward could be your last. That is where your best teams belong.
